My Life Story

Hi my name is Cameron, or Cam for short, and I am 12 years old. Since I was four, I have always liked building and creating different sculptures out of cardboard and wood. One of my first creations was a car I made out of cardboard. I remember taking the wheels off my plastic toy car and putting them on my cardboard car to make it move. I thought my mum would be mad at me for taking the wheels off my toy car but she was amazed at what I had created.

When I was eight, I wanted a Nintendo DS and my Mum and Dad said if I can work out a way to earn some money, they would match what I earned. So one night I had a dream about a mouse that ordered a can of beer from a hippo behind the bar. When I woke up, I told my Mum and Dad about the dream and at that moment I knew I was going to collect cans, because in South Australia we receive a 10-cent refund for empty aluminium cans. I decided to go around the neighbourhood to see if neighbours were able to save their cans for me to recycle. So Cam’s Can Collection was created and I raised $100 in about 6 months. During this exercise I learnt to communicate clearly, because at the first house I went to, I asked if they had any cans and the lady gave me a full can of Pepsi. I said to my Dad, “I learnt a lesson that I should ask for empty cans,” (but the Pepsi was nice).

I have built many things over the past three years, but the one I am most proud of would be the Mini Golf Course I made in my backyard last year. This was inspired after a family holiday to Victor Harbour where we played Mini Golf at an awesome course. My parents were very supportive of me building the Mini Golf Course in the backyard and it was great making it with my Dad because he showed me how to use a lot of different tools. I drew several different course designs on paper, so that I could fit in as many holes as possible. It took us a while to prepare the course and buy materials like fake lawn, garden edging, pipes, stakes, and pots. We had to wack the sand to make it flat and then lay the fake lawn, cut the holes in the lawn and then dig holes. My favourite hole is the fifth hole where we built a ramp with cement and sand. You Putt up the ramp that goes down a pipe and straight into the hole. Overall, I think we did an awesome job building our very own 5 Hole Mini Golf Course. This is where and when my passion of becoming an architect – so that I can build and design Mini Golf Courses around the world – was born.

One day, during the school holidays in October 2010, I was bored and decided to make a Ferris wheel, because we had just been on one a few days before. Firstly, I tried to make it out of straws and string, but it didn’t work. I didn’t give up and I tried to make it out of tooth picks, skewers, sticky tape, paper clips and Popsicle sticks. I thought that what I had created was a huge success and was proud of myself for completing it.

My other passion is being involved in the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation, which I have done over the past three years. My nanny passed away after she had Cancer. This inspired me to want to do something to help other people. Over the past two years, I entered a team in her honour to do the challenge and together we raised over $1,200. This year we decided to colour our hair bright red. To help people who are sick has been a very good experience.

To me, success is about feeling proud of myself and helping others. I have learnt many things through these experiences like communicating with people of different ages which has helped improve my confidence. My family inspires me, especially when they give me good comments about something I built.

My dream is to go to University to study Architecture and Landscaping so that I can become an architect and design Mini Golf Courses around the world.

If I build something and it doesn’t work, I will try another way.

I always try and never give up.

My Wisdom   Never give up.
If you're not sure, ask your parents for advice.
Help others - it makes you feel good.
Ask Questions - if you don't ask you won't know.
Creating is fun.
